What is sandblasting?

Sandblasting – also called abrasive blasting – fires a fine abrasive media at a surface under air pressure. It scours away rust, mill scale, old paint, powder coat and contamination, leaving clean metal with a slightly textured profile. That texture is exactly what a new coating needs to grip onto.

It's far quicker and more thorough than wire brushes or sanding, and it reaches into corners, welds and awkward shapes that are almost impossible to strip by hand. If you've been searching for sandblasting near me or shot blasting near me around Stratford-upon-Avon, our studio at Langley Farm, CV37 0RN, is close by.

What we sandblast

  • Alloy and steel wheels – before wheel refurbishment and powder coating
  • Car and motorbike parts – brackets, suspension parts, classic car components and restoration projects
  • Garden and vintage furniture – metal chairs, tables, benches and gates with years of rust and paint
  • Industrial and workshop parts – metal components and fabrications that need a clean surface
  • Metal fittings and home items – vintage metalwork worth bringing back to life

Blasting is carried out on items brought to us. Not sure if your piece is suitable? Send a photo and rough size and we'll let you know.

Why surface preparation makes or breaks a finish

Most coating failures start underneath: a new layer applied over rust, grease or loose paint can look fine at first, then bubble, flake and lift within months. Sandblasting removes those weak layers completely so the new finish bonds to sound, clean metal. It also reveals the true condition of the part – pitting, cracks or thin areas show up clearly, so they can be dealt with before coating rather than discovered afterwards.

Our sandblasting process

  • Assessment – we look at the item, its condition and what finish it's going on to have
  • Masking – threads, bearing faces and surfaces that must stay untouched are protected
  • Blasting – rust, paint and old coatings removed back to clean metal
  • Inspection – any pitting or damage is checked and discussed with you
  • Next step – straight on to powder coating, or returned to you ready for paint

Sandblasting followed by powder coating

Bare, freshly blasted metal starts to oxidise quickly if it's left exposed, so the best results come from coating soon after blasting. That's why most of our blasting work goes straight on to powder coating under the same roof – no transporting parts between workshops, and no waiting for surface rust to return. If you only need the blasting, tell us what you plan to do next and we'll advise how to protect the metal in the meantime.

We welcome sandblasting work from across Warwickshire, including Warwick, Leamington Spa, Alcester and Redditch.

Sandblasting FAQ

Common
questions

How much does sandblasting cost?

It depends on the size of the item, how much rust or paint needs removing and whether it's going on to be powder coated. Send photos with rough dimensions on WhatsApp and we'll give you a price before starting.

What's the difference between sandblasting and shot blasting?

Both are forms of abrasive blasting that clean and profile a surface. The terms are often used interchangeably; the main difference is the type of media used. We'll use the approach that suits your part and the finish it's going on to have.

Will sandblasting damage my part?

Blasting removes surface layers, not sound metal, when it's done with care. Delicate areas, threads and mating faces are masked, and we'll discuss anything unusual, such as thin or heavily pitted metal, before we start.

Do I need to coat the part straight after blasting?

Ideally, yes. Freshly blasted bare metal can start to rust quickly, which is why most of our blasting work goes straight on to powder coating. If you're painting it yourself, we'll advise how to protect it until then.

Do you sandblast on site?

Our sandblasting is done on items brought to our studio at Langley Farm, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 0RN. Send us a photo if you're unsure whether your item is suitable.
