What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Instead of liquid paint, a fine powder is applied to clean, bare metal using an electrostatic charge, so it wraps evenly around edges and into corners. The part is then cured with heat, which melts the powder and bonds it into a hard, continuous skin.

The result is a finish that is generally thicker and more resistant to chips, scratches and weather than spray paint. There are no runs or drips, it copes well with road grit, salt and sunlight, and it is a popular choice for anything that has to look good and take a knock – from a set of alloy wheels to a garden bench that lives outside all year.

Why the preparation matters

A powder coat is only as good as the surface underneath it. Old paint, rust, grease or previous coatings trapped under a new finish will eventually lift it off. That's why every job starts with getting back to clean metal – usually by sandblasting – followed by careful cleaning and masking of anything that must stay uncoated, such as threads, bearing faces or mating surfaces.

Our powder coating process

  • Assessment – we check the item, agree colour and finish, and note any repairs needed
  • Stripping & sandblasting – old paint, rust and contamination removed back to bare metal
  • Repairs & preparation – minor repairs where possible, degreasing and masking
  • Powder application – an even coat applied electrostatically
  • Curing – the coating is baked so it flows out and hardens into a durable finish
  • Inspection & collection – checked, unmasked and ready to refit or use

Colours and finishes

We offer a wide range of colours and finishes, including gloss, satin, matt and metallic effects. Whether you want to match an original factory colour, go subtle with satin black or make a statement with a bright custom shade, ask us for your colour – RAL colours on request, just ask us what's available for your job.

Powder coating prices

Alloy wheels: a set of four 15"–17" wheels from £200, 18"–21" from £250 and over 21" priced individually – tyre removal and refitting, preparation, 3-stage oven-cured powder coating, balancing and new valves included. See wheel prices.

Furniture, car parts and other metalwork are priced individually. Prices depend on the size and number of items, their condition and how much preparation they need – a lightly marked bracket is very different from a heavily rusted garden set. The quickest way to get an accurate price is to send us photos on WhatsApp with approximate dimensions and the colour you're after.

Powder coating FAQ

Common
questions

How much does powder coating cost?

Alloy wheels start from £200 for a set of four 15"–17" wheels and from £250 for 18"–21". Furniture, car parts and other metal items are priced individually – it depends on the size and number of items, their condition and how much preparation is needed. Send us photos with rough dimensions and your colour on WhatsApp and we'll give you a clear price before any work starts.

Is powder coating better than spray painting?

For most metal parts, yes. Powder coating is usually applied thicker and cured with heat, so it tends to resist chips, scratches, weather and road grime better than a typical spray-painted finish, with no runs or drips.

Can you powder coat garden furniture?

Yes. Metal chairs, tables, benches and similar outdoor pieces are a great fit for powder coating. We strip the old paint and rust first so the new finish bonds to clean metal and stands up to the weather.

Can you powder coat car parts?

Yes – metal parts removed from the vehicle, such as brackets, suspension components and classic car or motorbike parts. Threads and mating surfaces are masked so parts refit properly. Ask us if you're unsure whether a part is suitable.

What colours can I choose?

We offer a wide range of colours in gloss, satin, matt and metallic finishes. If you have a specific colour or RAL code in mind, ask us and we'll confirm what's available for your job.
